New, Low Calorie, Healthier Fries at Burger King

Sunday October 13 is the last day to get your Totally FREE, Low Calorie SatisFRIES at a Burger King near you. No coupon necessary!

REVIEW: *****4 1/2 stars out of 5
Jack (JB) dropped into a (Oakland, CA) Burger King to sample the Fries he’s been advertising. After all, Jack doesn’t want to advertise something he doesn’t believe in. Well, the previous reviews were born out as Jack has found the new SatisFRIES much to his liking.
They are less greasy than the regular fries and he says you can taste the potato better without as much oil and other factors. If it’s the heavy, oily, fried taste you’re after these may not be for you , but if you like the more natural, less adulterated taste, you’ll like these fries. The fries are not as crispy as the others but that didn’t make any difference to Jack.

Unlike the small Panda Express Sesame Chicken samples last month, Jack was also impressed that they gave him a full order (regularly around $1.79) absolutely FREE Of Charge! one per customer

We’re impressed that Burger King is way out ahead of the other fast food franchises in offering healthy alternatives to all the greasy, fried food. Burger King is the only fast food, other than Subway offering a veggie burger and now this healthier potatoproduct

Jack will try again at another location Sunday, to check for consistency of product and let you know.
So don’t forget to get yours today, Sunday Oct 13

And, please like us if you like this offer! and feel free to join our mailing list below for more future great deals like this.

Bill Clinton Explains Why He Became a Vegan and how we can — and for our health must

by Joe Conason, AARP The Magazine, August/September 2013 When Bill Clinton invited me to lunch in May, I knew better than to expect fried catfish or barbecued ribs. The former president is now a devoted vegan, meaning no meat, fish or dairy products, and he has pursued a healthier way of life for more than three years. While I figured our lunch menu might be bland, that would be a small price to pay for private time with a world leader who is anything but.   As it happens, the fit, trim and sharply attired Clinton, whom I’ve come to know well during more than two decades covering his career, is his usual gregarious, charismatic self. But a bland menu? Not even close.

Get Ready, Get Set — Go Vegan!

Hummus with raw vegetable batons.Hummus with raw vegetable batons. — Kat Teutsch
Dine like Bill Clinton does.Check out great recipes for hummus, quinoa, beets, cauliflower, snow peas, beans and more.
As we enter a private room overlooking Manhattan’s busy Rockefeller Center, I’m struck with a dazzling kaleidoscope of a dozen delicious dishes: including roasted cauliflower and cherry tomatoes, spiced and herbed quinoa with green onions, shredded red beets in vinaigrette, garlicky hummus with raw vegetable batons, Asian-inspired snow pea salad, an assortment of fresh roasted nuts, plates of sliced melon and strawberries, and rich, toothsome gigante beans tossed with onions in extra-virgin olive oil. The luncheon banquet gives a whole new meaning to the dreaded cliché “Eat your vegetables.” And this is exactly what Clinton, who is taking on America’s obesity epidemic with the same passionate commitment he brought to the presidency, wants. As I gawk, he smiles. “This looks pretty good, doesn’t it?” Clinton asks. It looks better than good. We sit down and with great relish start passing plates back and forth. He favored the quinoa; I loved the roasted cauliflower and snow peas; and we both liked the beans.

The road to a healthier diet

At age 66, Bill Clinton still travels and works at a pace that completely exhausts staffers who are two or three decades younger. Yet, while coping with heart disease and the usual complaints of aging, he has managed to change his diet drastically, lose more than 30 pounds and keep the weight off. If he can do all that, then maybe there’s hope for the rest of us baby boomers — and  Continue reading Bill Clinton Explains Why He Became a Vegan and how we can — and for our health must

Anti-aging Tips – Eyes, Exercise and Aging

We’re not getting older, we’re getting better – so the saying goes…

And it’s true. We CAN age gracefully…

We’ve noted a couple more significant issues during the aging process…

EYES

We all know that eyes change as we get older. Vision changes (near vision goes away for most -we’re among the lucky to which that hasn’t happened yet… perhaps it ‘s the vitamins , or, not getting hooked on prescription lenses. Tired eyes are another issue and later cataracts. Perhaps we can forestall the latter and other optical issues with some preventative measures

1) VITAMINS for Eyes – There are some vitamins out there exclusively for eyes. Trader Joes has one called ‘SuperVision.’ It has some different minerals and things you don’t usually see in your daily multiple vitamin like Lutein, most important for eyes. I good multiple vitamin is important too, as well as eating a balanced diet and lots of carrotts, says Bugs Bunny. You may see some relief in your watery , allergic eyes, too, just by adding the vitamins and improved diet

2)SLEEP – Get plenty of sleep to relieve those tired eyes.

3) WATER – Drink plenty of water – always a good thing to clear out the toxins

4) TEA BAGS and POTATO  SLICES for Tired Puffy Eyes. Not only will it help the appearance but it feels really good, especially the potatoes. Soothe those tired eyes.

5) EYE CREME – Good to wear some kind of inexpensive eye creme at night, especially to keep the skin around the eyes hydrated.

6) SUNGLASSES – Always wear sunglasses when you’re out for prolonged periods in the sun along with your SPF

BONUS / Not So Off The Wall

This may come as a shock and some may call this quackery but we strongly believe it. You may too. ..

If you’ve worn glasses or contacts regularly, for some time, notice your prescription changing every time you visit the eye doctor, ie a stronger lense prescribed?  It only makes sense that your eyes get more accustomed to the stronger lenses and gradually adjust to them, weakening the natural eye vision.

Sure, you want to be able to see. But, how’s about just using glasses when you really need them,  ie driving, night vision, etc.  This goes for near or far distance. If you wear them all the time you will definitely see a more rapid deterioration of your natural vision. But, you can delay this by wearing your glasses or contacts as little as possible. Or, you can also try 20/40 lenses to lessen the strain on the eyes.  Both of these principles go way back to something called the ‘Bates Method.’  Now, most eye doctors will frown on this info but it’s common sense and it works.  We’ve applied the principles for years and our eyes have not changed in 10 years since last visiting the doctor and we’re of advanced age.  Try it and come back in a year and tell us your prescription did not change

EXERCISE – Build Muscle,Not Speed

This one was just reinforced to us recently.

As we get older, from age 40, we begin losing muscle. So, the trick is to do exercises that build muscle.  Most people do weight lifting and the like when they’re young, but it’s especially important when you’re OLDER!  And, cut way back on the cardio as you get older. It will  only wear out your legs and AGE YOU more!

Good exercises to build muscle are moderate weight lifting, pushups and anything that involves pressure of arms and legs in an anaerobic apporach.

Top 7 Sources for Vegan / Vegetarian Protein

(NaturalNews) Like most people who have a higher health conscious, most vegans and vegetarians have a story about how they came to the decision to live their particular lifestyle. No matter your reasons, one of the challenges for non-meat eaters is making sure they get enough protein every day. But its not as big a deal as many think. Like most of the nutrients from quality food, a little goes a long way. Back in the hunter/gatherer days, primitive man ate a lot less meat – usually around 20% of his total diet – a far cry from how much the average American consumes daily in the 21st century.

Protein is an essential nutrient that plays a key role in how our bodies function. But too much protein is associated with several diseases. It is more important to eat a varied diet than to isolate and focus on any one nutrient. As long as calorie intake is adequate, it can be easy for vegan diets to meet protein recommendations (http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/protein.htm). RDA recommendations for protein are from .36 – .45 grams of protein per pound of body weight, or about 15-20% of calories. That’s roughly 48-60 grams/day.

Top sources of vegan protein

It’s a great time to be a vegan. As the numbers of vegans grows, the demand for vegan products increases. There are lots of nutrient dense foods with a decent protein content. Even meat eaters ought to vary their protein sources, and try some of these:

1. Vegetables – the proper foundation for all diets.
• 1 avocado – 10 grams
• 1 cup broccoli – 5 grams
• 1 cup spinach – 5 grams
• 2 cups cooked kale – 5 grams
• 1 cup boiled peas – 9 grams
• 1 cup cooked sweet potato – 5 grams

2. Legumes, also vegetables, get their own mention. Specifically lentils and beans, the foundation of many diets for centuries.
• 1 cup soybeans – 28 grams (1 cup tofu – 22 grams, 1 cup tempeh – 30 grams)
• 1 cup lentils – 18 grams
• 1 cup refried beans – 15.5 grams
• 1 cup garbanzo beans (and hummus) – 14.5 grams
• 1 cup pinto, kidney, black beans – 13-15 grams
• 1 oz peanuts – 6.5 grams

3. Nuts and seeds – a staple in most vegetarian and vegan diets.
• 1 oz. cashews – 4.4 grams
• 1 oz. sesame seeds 6.5 grams, 3 tablespoons of tahini – 8 grams
• 1/4 cup (2 oz.) walnuts – 5 grams
• 1 oz. pistachios – 5.8 grams
• 2 tbsp almonds – 4 grams
• Nut butters – peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter – 2 tablespoons has about 8 grams of protein

4. Non-dairy milk – Soy, almond, ancient grain. 1 cup gets you 7-9 grams of protein.

5. Grains – Ancient grains, sprouted grains, multi-grains – a major part of the diet.
• Quinoa is versatile and delicious. 1 cup – 9 grams.
• Amaranth, bulgur, brown rice, wheat germ, oat bran are other grains with a high protein content.
• Seitan, or flavored wheat gluten, has about 52 grams per cup, but it may not be a good idea to eat a lot of it.
• Oatmeal – 1 cup = 6 grams.
• Sprouted grain bread products – buns, tortillas, bread. Pack a sandwich or a wrap and you’ll get 7-10 grams from the bread alone.

6. Convenience foods: There are vegan protein powders and bars to fill in the gaps on the go. Hemp – 30 grams of hemp powder in your smoothie gives you 11 grams of protein.

7. Supplements – spirulina and chlorella are used often by vegetarians and vegans for their rich nutrient content, and protein content.

There are lots of cookbooks and websites with meal plans and inventive recipes, including many on how to make traditional dishes substituted with vegan ingredients.

Other topics often discussed regarding vegan diets include whether or not vegans need more iron or iodine. Requirements can be met without animal sources, but it is good to be mindful of it.

Whether its a long term lifestyle or a diet for cleansing, eating vegan can be enjoyable and rewarding. As with any diet, it is possible to be an unhealthy vegan. The best diets, vegan and otherwise, center around raw, fresh, organic vegetables. Many vegan’s stories begin with disease. They tried vegan to get better, and liked it so much it stuck.

Vegan, Vegetarian Dining – Many Restaurants Now Offer Healthy Alternatives to Meat

Congrats to Burger King , the only major fast food chain offering a
vegan/vegetarian sandwich on it’s menu. The ‘ BK (Burt Kaufman)Veggie Burger’ offered by Burger King at $2.99 has only 3 grams of fat and is quite tasty, if we may say so ourselves. (Tried it at three different locations).   You can ask   other chains for vegetarian or vegan and they’ll  tell you they’ll ‘take the meat out,’   which is one way to do it , but there are more creative and tastier alternatives.  At  Subway, buy the ‘Veggie Delight’ sandwich on multi-grain ‘Honey Oat ‘(our favorite) or regular multigrain bread  and take it home and add some portobello mushrooms and hummus or tahini dressing. Excellent! (You would think that one  of these days Subway will come up with its own real vegan treat like this  )…more @ http://healthfitness.ws

Meanwhile, for those who have never tried vegetarian or, better, vegan, you would be surprised at the taste and  at what some of the smaller chains and single food establishments offer. Just ask any ‘with it’ restaurant and they’ll usually have a vegan or vegetarian dish on their menu, which we find is often better tasting than the other items on the menu.

7.3 Million Americans  ( or 5% of the US Population) now describe themselves as vegetarians (non-meat eaters) and one million vegans (nothing with a face). (Vegetarian Magazine)  Of course, the San Francisco Bay Area is a mecca for vegans and vegetarians. If they don’t  offer a vegetarian or vegan dish on the menu you can often come up with your own. At Pizza Antica (multiple locations) we had a pizza using only oil free tomato sauce on top of the whole wheat crust, topped with mushrooms, onions and roast peppers; we found it better tasting than the usual cheese-based pizzas.  Chow Restaurant offers a nice special    vegan plate of various healthy and tasty items.   Get the Asparagus pasta at Dead Fish in Crockett fora real vegan treat .  There are even a few full fledged Vegan and Vegetarian Restaurants. Especially in places  like Berkeley and Santa Cruz you’ll find wonderful vegan experiences at places like Cafe Gratitude.  Enjoy.

From PETA.com….

Some well-meaning vegans have chosen to ignore the fast-food and chain restaurant market because of its emphasis on animal flesh, but the bottom line is this: In order to convince meat-eaters to stop eating animals, vegetarian options must be convenient and available in the places where meat-eaters munch. There will never be vegan or vegetarian options at restaurant chains unless vegetarians and vegans support them. Some of us never thought that we’d see the day when Burger King or Bennigan’s offered veggie burgers, but now that they do, the millions of carnivores who eat there can see that choosing meatless meals is easy and tasty. This is a huge step in the right direction.

Almost every restaurant has at least one vegan dish available. By making educated choices and asking the server for assistance, dining out can be a delicious—and cruelty-free—experience! We put together this handy guide to help you navigate the chain restaurant world.

Finally, both the Pan-Asian noodles and the linguini with marinara sauce are vegan, as are the sides of steamed baby bok choy, white rice, and seasonal vegetables.

All of Manhattan Bagel’s bagels are vegan, except for the jalapeño cheddar cheese and egg varieties, and its bialys—a flattened onion-and-poppy-seed bagel—are also vegan. The Manhattan Grille and Vegetable Garden sandwiches can be made on a bagel, a roll, or a tortilla and are vegan if you omit the spreads and cheese.

HOSPITAL MAKES A

DIFFERENCE – CHOOSE BEST

HOSPITAL

Many don’t consider they may have a choice of hospitals when going for  inpatient or outpatient visits, but one’s choice of hospital can make a big difference, sometimes a life altering difference.

As the above chart indicates for a sampling of hospitals in the San Francisco Oakland East Bay Area, there is quite a range, from a high score of  62  at John Muir Concord to a low score of 44 at Sutter Delta medical center in antioch, for this small sampling. (Consomer Reports). There are at least two online safety score guides, ConsumerReports.org (as above) or http://www.hospitalsafetyscore.org/   There are overall scores, as above, or using ‘A,B,C ‘ grading as   with http://www.hospitalsafetyscore.org/ , which are broken down specific categories where one can check the prominence of infections, frequency with which one must return to hospital following initial visit,  costs, etc. For ConsumerReports you may need to sign up with them, though it may be the easier of the two systems to follow.

Surprisingly, some of the hospitals that you thought had great reputations may not be so popular with actual patients, themselves, who have spent time int he hospitals. Witness world reknown UCSF in San Francisco, which manages only a ‘B’ score (http://www.hospitalsafetyscore.org/) and John Muir Walnut Creek, which manages only a ’45’ (ConsumerReports.org)

choosing a hospital

We recently had personal experience at the two John Muirs noted above.  We totally agree with the above nuimbers, finding John Muir Concord far superior, all around, as compared to John Muir Walnut Creek, surprisingly, despite the fact that the Walnut Creek has a brand new campus with the latest   surgical tools and procedures.  Of course, a major decision as to choice of hospital deals with the particular medical need, and different hospitals are also rated by medical procedure.

So, next time you or your loved one must go to a hospital you may want to check one or both above reports.
